Last April, we hosted Steffen Juhl of <a href="http://salmonjunkies.com/">Salmon Junkies</a>, a company that provides outstanding trips for Atlantic Salmon on the world renowned Varzuga and Umba rivers. We wanted to see what Steffen and photographer/videographer Columbus Leth thought about Spring Steelhead on the lower Skeena system, and perhaps how they might compare to their Atlantic cousins. Turns out they enjoyed the fishing so much, they're coming back again in 2014 - this time for several weeks, and with a few friends in tow! Here's a great video shot and filmed by Columbus - we think you'll agree that there's some pretty darn good stuff in there...</div>

When the fishing is as good as it is in a particular week, at some point it will eventually slow down as river conditions change or fish move through the system. Fortunately, this was not the case last week as we again had one of our best Spring weeks to date here at Nicholas Dean. Agent, writer and photographer <a href="http://www.jeffbright.com/">Jeff Bright</a>, hosted the week, and along with him were guests Jim Leithliter, Steffen Juhl and Columbus Leth. Steffen is no stranger to the international fishing community, nor is Columbus. Steffen is the owner and CEO of <a href="http://salmonjunkies.com/">Salmon Junkies</a>, a company that offers first rate Atlantic Salmon trips on the famed Kola peninsula, and Columbus is a professional photographer who specializes in portraits, food and outdoor photography, and more recently, high quality travel/destination videos. To see some of his work, check out <a href="http://www.columbusleth.dk/">Columbus Leth Photography</a>. </div>

We are pleased to announce that veteran Skeena guide, Scott Young, has joined our full time guiding staff this year. Scott is a well respected guide from the Terrace region who brings a wealth of experience to the team. He is an excellent caster, knows how to read water exceptionally well and is an all around fish magnet. Scott also has great communication skills and patience, and focuses on providing outstanding customer service, which makes him a real asset here at Nicholas Dean Outdoors. Welcome to the team, Scott! </div>

Because of the recent changes from the federal Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) back to the old Government Sales Tax (GST) system in British Columbia, our trips have just gotten a slight break in price. As of April 1, 2013, the GST is now in effect. So, if you are a Canadian resident, taxes on trip costs will fall from 12% under the HST system to 5% for GST, and from 6% HST to 2.5% for GST if you're joining us from outside of Canada (including the non-resident rebate for tour packages). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the end, this means your total trip costs will be less, providing you with further savings on your trip - and more money in your pocket, which is always a good thing...</div>

Simply put, it's been a fantastic start to our Spring Steelhead season
here at Nicholas Dean. Unseasonably warm temperatures, a good push of larger-than-average Spring fish in the rivers and happy guests have made the first two weeks of our season very successful. Simply put, it's been a great Winter for Steelhead fly fishing opportunities here in the Skeena region near Terrace. Temperatures have consistently stayed close to the freezing mark on most days since mid January, and there are some fish around. Here's a few shots from our Winter Steelhead collection this year, as we look forward to starting our Spring guiding season in a month's time!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's no doubt that the Skeena region is best known for its Summer Steelhead fishing, particularly in September and October. However, the lower Skeena region near Terrace, because of its close proximity to the Ocean, offers additional opportunities for Winter and Spring run fish in the big river itself, its tributaries, and small, not-to-be-named coastal rivers. </div>

If you are interested in seeing a different fishery that offers quality fishing on a variety of rivers, with the potential for some very large fish, you might want to consider our Spring fishery. For more information, check out our general <a href="http://nicholasdean.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Spring-Steelhead-20131.pdf">Spring Steelhead & Chinook</a> brochure, or for a slightly different experience 'off the beaten path,' so to speak, our <a href="http://nicholasdean.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Adventure-Steelhead-2013.pdf">Adventure Steelhead</a> brochure. We recently had some last minute cancellations which have opened up space during prime weeks. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fishing this past week has been productive on the mainstem Skeena. While overall numbers of Salmon have started to drop off, there's a few more of these chrome bullets around...</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fishing on the mainstem Skeena this past week has been rewarding for our clients, with many bright, chrome fish to 20 lbs landed. Clients Yves and Claude travelled all the way from New Caledonia in the south Pacific to fish with us for the first time, and they left very happy indeed, having fulfilled their dream of catching their first Steelhead! Their best day was eight Steelhead hooked, though as with most days, one to three was the average and in-line with expectations. Yves even lost a monster 25 lb Steelhead mid week that straightened out his hook! The reality is that you need more than a little luck to land fish of this size on the mainstem Skeena, as these fish are incredibly strong and know how to use the Skeena's heavy currents to their advantage. Look for more photos on our third week at the Skeena Camp in our next post...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week, we feel particularly flattered. Not because of any specific compliments made by guests - though we had those last week, too - but because a young couple chose to fish with us for their honeymoon! Andrew and Lisa Schweitzer are die hard spey anglers from Seattle, who have fished extensively for Steelhead in the US Pacific Northwest, and were just married a few short weeks ago. <br />
Following the wedding, they boarded a plane and headed to Terrace, where they fished on their own for a few days prior to staying with us at our on-river Skeena Camp. It's not all that often that you see a couple together who are as passionate about Steelhead fly fishing as Andrew and Lisa are, and we were fortunate to spend time with them both on the river. While they didn't land as many Steelhead on their trip as they may have liked, they did find some quality fish and left 'happy campers.' Andrew and Lisa, it was a pleasure to host you!</div>

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Jim Britton and his friends and clients from <a href="http://www.oscarsadventuretravel.com/">Oscar's Adventure Travel</a> in Smithers, BC. With river levels dropping and about 2 ft of visibility in the mainstem Skeena, these were prime conditions for targeting Steelhead & Salmon migrating slowly up its margins. Here's a few highlights of their week...</div>

We're fresh off our first week at the Skeena Camp, and what a week it was! We had repeat guest Edgardo from Brazil join us again following an epic trip in October/November 2011 that saw him land several large Steelhead, including 22 and 24 lb fish, in the same day! This time, he brought his brother Alejandro and several friends from Brazil and Argentina, and as you can tell from the smiles on their faces, they thoroughly enjoyed their trip at the Skeena Camp! Looking for good fishing in a remote location, we sited the camp several kilometres downstream below Terrace, complete with a postcard perfect vista. Here's some of the highlights from Week 1. All photos by Edgardo Postigo and Roberto Germano.</div>

With Steelhead numbers at the mouth of the Skeena River this year estimated to be nearly double that of the 10 year average, you could say that we have the makings of an excellent Steelhead return this year. Josh Buck is certainly off to a great start, having landed this 30 lb Steelhead on the mainstem Skeena earlier this week! When you're fishing the Skeena system, it's prudent (and exciting!) to always keep it in the back of your mind that fish of this size - and sometimes larger - can be migrating past you at any point in time...</div>Nicholas Dean Outdoorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16933046051124072179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4283987599399881890.post-25394836325618805362012-07-27T14:55:00.000-07:002012-07-27T14:55:57.470-07:00Nicholas Dean Outdoors - same great company!<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Recently, you may have noticed that our blog name was changed from Nicholas Dean Lodge to Nicholas Dean Outdoors. This is just one of a few changes that we'll be making to better reflect our working relationship with <a href="http://www.yellowcedarlodge.ca/">Yellow Cedar Lodge</a>, the facility where our clients stay for the best of accommodations and fine dining in Terrace. In the early years of the business, we operated a full service facility just off Kalum Lake Road on the outskirts of Terrace, and branding Nicholas Dean as a lodge made the most sense then. However, with the move to Yellow Cedar Lodge several years ago this has proved to be a little confusing at times for clients. So, to minimize this confusion and further enhance branding for both ourselves and Yellow Cedar Lodge, you will now see our brand as Nicholas Dean Outdoors. Rest assured, however, that we're the exact same staff and company that you've fished with and come to know previously at NDL! Plus, we also think that Nicholas Dean Outdoors has a pretty cool ring to it. :)</div>Nicholas Dean Outdoorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16933046051124072179noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4283987599399881890.post-46027489033270756662012-07-20T07:14:00.000-07:002012-07-20T07:20:37.576-07:00Record Chinook Salmon at Nicholas Dean to Date<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

We are still feeling the effects of the large snowpack and cool Spring, as water conditions have still remained high on the Skeena and the majority of its tributaries. However, the Kitimat River has still continued to provide reasonably good fishing on most days, and there are still some absolutely huge Chinook in the system, along with the arrival of the numerous Chums and Pinks. One of last week's highlights? Client Ruud from South Africa experienced what he called the "fight of his lifetime!" In a long, slow moving pool with a soft inside seam, he hooked a very large Chinook estimated in the 45 to 50 lb range, and he fought it for well over an hour before the 20 lb tippet broke on a mid stream snag. The Kitimat can be notorious for all the wood in its substrata, which sometimes makes for an unfortunate ending with big fish. But, you can bet that this experience will be etched in his memory for a long time to come.... </div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">Just came across this video today while on the <a data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/page.php?id=147375521978619" href="http://www.skeenawild.org/">SkeenaWild Conservation Trust</a> website. This is such a great example of a project and company that has clear goals for utilizing a natural resource to create a high quality product, while at the same time minimizing impacts on other non-target resources. In this case, it's smoked salmon jerky that is caught sustainably by first nations fisheries at t<span class="text_exposed_show">heir terminus, which allows more abundant stocks to be targeted, while protecting non-target species like Steelhead, Coho and Chinook, as well as weaker stocks in other rivers. Kudos to Patagonia and its partners in this project! On a more personal note, I've sampled each of the different jerkies and can confirm that they are tasty - <a href="http://www.patagonia.com/us/patagonia.go?assetid=65753">give them a try yourself</a>!</span></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As is often the case with fishing, varying water levels, clarity and
weather conditions have all had an influence on fishing during the past
two weeks of our Chinook Fly Fishing season. A large snowpack -
rumoured in the 180% to 220% range, depending on who you talk to - combined with unseasonably cool weather had delayed the freshet that
normally has subsided on the Kitimat River and other Skeena river
tributaries by mid June. Jeff Bright and his client Don Nelson were on
the back end of this freshet, but still managed to hook into and land
several Chinook between 15 and 35 lbs in the last week of June. With
water levels being close to perfect this week for these anadromous
freight trains - decent flows, with just enough clarity for the fish to
see the fly - our clients experienced outstanding fly fishing in what
was the best week of fly Chinook Fly Fishing we've experienced - ever!
Here's a few photos from clients Adrien and Phil from the UK. </div>
